Yamuna Expressway is the main road for this trip. NH-19 through Mathura is the older road at about 210 km. Toll is far lower but it runs through towns and takes well over four hours.
A Taj Mahal day trip means leaving Delhi by 5 am to reach before the gates get busy. The expressway is well lit but notorious for night-time accidents involving stray cattle and overloaded trucks — daylight driving is genuinely safer here.
There are proper rest plazas around the 60 km and 100 km marks with fuel, toilets and food. Fill up before you enter — fuel stations on the expressway itself are sparse.
