Which route to take

NH-44 to Chandigarh, then NH-3 via Mandi is the main road for this trip. Via Shimla is longer and slower but far more scenic, and it splits the climb over two days if you are not in a hurry.

When to leave

Most people leave Delhi around 9 or 10 pm and drive through the night to reach Manali by mid-morning. If you would rather not, break the journey at Chandigarh or Mandi. Winter months bring snow beyond Manali and Atal Tunnel closures.

Where to stop

Murthal for parathas, Chandigarh or Ropar for a proper meal, Sundernagar and Mandi in the hills. Fuel is easy up to Mandi and thinner after that.

Common questions

How much does Delhi to Manali cost by car?

For a petrol hatchback, roughly ₹2,675 of fuel one way at 19 km/l, plus about ₹500 of toll — near ₹3,200 one way or ₹6,000 return. A diesel SUV runs closer to ₹3,300 one way.

How long is the drive?

Twelve to fourteen hours realistically, including meal and fuel stops. Anyone promising ten is not counting the mountain section honestly.

Is it safe to drive to Manali at night?

The NH-44 half is fine at night. The mountain section past Bilaspur is better in daylight, particularly in monsoon when landslides are a real risk. Leaving Delhi late evening puts you in the hills at dawn, which is the usual compromise.

Do I need a permit?

Not for Manali itself. You do for Rohtang Pass and beyond, arranged separately.
